Patterns of minority group treatment

1.  Cultural pluralism - allows each group to keep its unique cultural identity  (salad bowl/America)

2.  Assimilation - blending of culturally distinct groups into a single group w a common culture and identity (melting pot...  1980s Bulgarian government  forced assimilation on the Turkish people - not allowing them to practice their religion, speak their language and from celebrating their culture

3.  Legal Protection - legal steps to ensure the rights of minority groups (Civil Rights Act of 1964, Voting Rights Act of 1965, Affirmative Action...)

4.  Segregation - policies that physically separate a minority group from the dominate group (Jim Crow Laws)    *there are two types of segregation:  De jure - upheld by law, Defacto - based on informal norms

5.  Subjugation - maintaining control of a group through force (slavery)

6.  Population Transfer - dominate group transfers minority group to a new territory (Native Americans to reservations, Asian Americans to relocation camps during the war)

7.  Extermination - intentional destruction of the entire minority group  (Extermination of Jews in Germany)
